Academic Counselor K-12 - Eugenio María de Hostos Charter School

JOB TITLE: ACADEMIC COUNSELOR K-12 

FULL TIME - EXEMPT

SALARY RANGE: $50,000 - $60,000 +

 

School Description:
Eugenio María de Hostos Charter School is in its 23rd year of operation as a K-12 school, serving over 900 students. EMHCS offers a dual language program in grades K-2 and a Spanish Language Arts program for grades 3-12. Our school is fortunate to have staff, students and parents working together to create partnerships for learning. It is the mission of the Eugenio María de Hostos Charter School to create a safe and nurturing community of learners where students earn the Seal of Biliteracy (English and Spanish), learn to advocate for social justice and are prepared to enjoy and access what the world has to offer.

Summary of Position:
The academic counselor will work with students on academic requirements, career resources, academic abilities, goal setting and preparation for graduation. The academic counselor will advise and support students on their academic goals. 

Essential Functions:

  • Teach students life skills to be successful in the school environment.  
  • Provide academic intervention plans for students identified as low performing.
  • Monitor the progress of at-risk students.
  • Help students create a plan to achieve academic goals.
  • Assist teachers and administrators in implementing strategies to support student’s academic 
    growth.  
  • Work in collaboration with school leadership and social worker to connect students and families 
    with community programs to enhance and support academic progress.
  • Help students understand their academic record, including test results, marks, and educational 
    plan.
  • Communicate with parent, teachers and students.
  • Develop techniques for disseminating educational and career information and relate it to school 
    curricula.
  • Maintain accurate case files and reports.
  • Proper tracking of student’s issues and progress.
  • Participate in Individual Education Plan (IEP) process as requested by the Special Education 
    Coordinator.
  • Work in collaboration with College and Career Liaison to provide students with opportunities and 
    access to college and career experiences.  
  • Organize and lead small groups with a focus on providing strategies and tools to support 
    academic and behaviors.  
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor and CEO.

Education / Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s Degree Preferred
  • Additional subject area NY State Teaching Certificate a plus
  • Spanish a plus, but only required for Bilingual positions
  • Computer literacy 

 

Physical Demands:

This position does require occasional standing, squatting frequent sitting and lifting of up to approximate 10lbs
