ELA grades 7 & 8 Classroom Teacher - Eugenio Maria De Hostos Charter School

JOB TITLE: MIDDLE SCHOOL ELA 7th & 8th CLASSROOM TEACHER

FULL TIME - EXEMPT

SALARY RANGE: $50k - $60k + 

 

School Description:
Eugenio María de Hostos Charter School is in its 23rd year of operation as a K-12 school, serving over 900 students. EMHCS offers a dual language program in grades K-2 and a Spanish Language Arts program for grades 3-12. Our school is fortunate to have staff, students and parents working together to create partnerships for learning. It is the mission of the Eugenio María de Hostos Charter School to create a safe and nurturing community of learners where students earn the Seal of Biliteracy (English and Spanish), learn to advocate for social justice and are prepared to enjoy and access what the world has to offer.

Summary of Position:
The English Language Arts Teacher is responsible for creating a classroom environment that develops the student’s skill of listening, speaking, reading and writing.  Teacher will instruct students, in grades six through eight. The teacher will help students build on fundamentals they learned in elementary  school to prepare them for high school curricula. Teacher will teach a few subjects or one specialized subject.  Under the general supervision of the building principal and administrators, the teacher is responsible to facilitate student success and growth in academic and interpersonal skills through 
implementing the core curriculum.  

Essential Functions:

  • Develops and administers school core curriculum.
  • Promotes a classroom environment conducive to individualized and small group instruction and student learning, and adapts teaching methods to meet students’ varying needs.
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction.
  • Encourages parental involvement in students’ education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
  • Communicates the level of student achievement and progress toward established classroom, school and state standards to parents.
  • Ensures that students’ conduct conforms with the standards and policies at EMHCS and establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  • Coordinates with other professional staff members, especially within grade level, to evaluate and access curriculum.
  • Participates in professional development opportunities, staff meetings, committees and school-wide events.
  • Supervises students in activities that take place out of the classroom during the school day.
  • Prepares and maintains accurate and complete records as required by law and school policy.
  • Follows State Education Department Regulations.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor and CEO

Skills and Abilities:

  • Must have experience working with school-age children in a structured setting
  • Must obtain a clear background check through fingerprinting
  • Must be able to follow oral and written instructions
  • Must be available for meetings and trainings outside working hours as needed
  • Must have the ability to reflect on one’s own performance
  • Must be committed to work the full school year and summer as needed
  • Must be able to interact positively with others individually and in teams
  • Must be sensitive to each family’s values, beliefs, traditions and cultural influences

 

Education / Experience:

  • Master’s Degree Preferred
  • Successful prior teaching experience preferred 
  • Must have a New York State Teacher Certification or in progress
  • Spanish plus, but only required for bilingual positions 
  • Working knowledge of word processing, internet applications, and computer literacy

 

Physical Demands:

This position does require occasional standing, squatting frequent sitting and lifting of up to approximate 10lbs
